The mistake almost everyone makes
A new shop owner gets a website built in week one, proudly puts the URL on the signboard — and then discovers the business name on the GST certificate does not match the name on the site, the bank account is in a different name again, and the Google listing points to the old address.
Now it all has to be redone. Twice the cost, for work that was already paid for.
The fix is free: do it in the right order. Here it is.
Step 1 — Register the business and get GST sorted first
Everything downstream — bank account, Google listing, payment gateway, invoices on the website — inherits the legal name you settle on here. Change it later and you touch every one of them again.
When is GST registration actually mandatory? Jharkhand is a normal category state, so the turnover thresholds are:
| You supply | Register once aggregate turnover crosses |
|---|---|
| Goods | ₹40 lakh |
| Services | ₹20 lakh |
But turnover is not the only trigger. You need a GSTIN regardless of turnover if you sell across state lines or through a marketplace like Amazon or Flipkart. A lot of first-time sellers get caught by exactly this.
Registration on the official GST portal is free. If a CA files it for you, you are paying for their time, not for the registration itself — and that is a reasonable thing to pay for.
Documents for a proprietorship:
- PAN of the proprietor
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, linked to the mobile number that will receive the OTP
- Passport-size photograph
- Proof of business address — electricity bill, rent agreement, or NOC for shared premises
- Bank proof — cancelled cheque or a statement showing name, account number and branch
One detail that causes most rejections: the address on your proof must match the address on the application exactly. Not nearly. Exactly.
Rules change, and your situation may have wrinkles this article cannot see. Confirm the current position on gst.gov.in or with a CA before you file. We build websites — we are not your tax advisor.
Step 2 — Claim your Google Business Profile
Do this before the website. It is free, and for a shop in Jamshedpur it is worth more than a website in the early months.
When someone searches "hardware shop near me" or "kirana Bistupur," Google shows the map results above everything else. That is your customer, standing on the street with a phone, ready to buy right now. No website ranks fast enough to compete with that in month one.
Get the name, address, phone and hours exactly right — matching your GST certificate — add real photos, and start asking happy customers for reviews from day one.
Step 3 — Now build the website
With the legal name settled and the Google listing live, the website has something true to point at.
For a new shop, the honest first version is small:
- Who you are and what you sell
- Where you are, with a map that opens directions in one tap
- A phone number and a WhatsApp button that work on the first tap
- Your hours
- Photographs of the actual shop, not stock images of a shop
That is a 1–5 page site: ₹10,000 – ₹25,000, plus roughly ₹800–₹1,500 a year for the domain and ₹2,000–₹5,000 for hosting. Full ranges are on our pricing page.
Resist the urge to build more. You do not yet know what your customers will ask for. Ship the small version, watch what people actually contact you about, then add.
What the first year actually costs
For a new single-location shop, digital setup only — not stock, not rent, not staff:
| Item | Realistic cost |
|---|---|
| GST registration on the portal | ₹0 (CA fee separate, if you use one) |
| Google Business Profile | ₹0 |
| Domain (1 year) | ₹800 – ₹1,500 |
| Hosting (1 year) | ₹2,000 – ₹5,000 |
| Website, 1–5 pages | ₹10,000 – ₹25,000 |
| First-year total | roughly ₹13,000 – ₹32,000 |
The two most valuable items on that list cost nothing. That is not a sales pitch against ourselves — it is just true, and you would rather hear it now.
The order, one more time
- Business name and GST — everything else inherits it
- Bank account — in the registered name
- Google Business Profile — free, fastest return
- Website — small, honest, fast on mobile
- Ads and social — only once steps 1–4 are solid
Skipping to step 5 is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
